Minimally, the male enhancement product should at least contain all of the following:
Yohimbe - a tree that grows throughout the African nations of Cameroon, Gabon and Zaire. (A similar plant in South America is called Quebracho). For centuries, natives from these areas have ingested both the crude bark and purified compound as a tonic to enhance sexual prowess and as an aphrodisiac. The bark has been smoked as a hallucinogen and has been used in traditional medicine to treat angina and hypertension. The herb is a sensual stimulant for healthy men and women. Today, doctors prescribe an extract from the tree to treat organic impotence. Yohimbe's energizing effects stem from it's ability to increase blood flow to the genitals, both male and female. It is thought to stimulate the pelvic nerve ganglia and thus is helpful for men with erection problems. In fact a prescription drug, yohimbine hydrochloride, is the only FDA approved drug for impotence. Effects can include increased libido, increased sensation and increased stamina. Women have also reported similar effects and general pleasant sensations.
Avena Sativa - Avena sativa is an extract from wild oats straw, and a rather recent entry to the field of aphrodisiacs. While oats have a long reputation of being the most energizing grain, the alleged sexual effects have not commonly been recognized in previous centuries. Avena sativa is said to free up bound testosterone in both men an women. If this were indeed the case, a prosexual effect would be obvious. Most positive effects of testosterone, including sex drive, are attributed to free testosterone, while bound testosterone is mainly a subject of study when enlarged prostates are the primary concern. One of the first crossover double-blind studies performed involved 75 men and women. It showed a significant increase in sex drive in men only. The men in the study reported greater firmness of erections and more pleasure during the act of sex. In a prior pilot study, many men reported more frequent orgasms and some even experienced multiple orgasms.
Arginine - Arginine plays a number of important roles in the body, including stimulating glands such as the pituitary and thymus. These glandular secretions may affect sperm formation, muscle-building, and immune function. L-arginine may also promote heart health by helping to improve blood cholesterol profiles, relieve heart-related chest pains (angina), and control blood pressure. L-arginine has also been shown to act as a precursor in the body for nitric oxide. A gas molecule, nitric oxide has a number of potential effects on body cells, including the ability to relax arteries and small blood vessels. This can benefit sexual response by maintaining blood flow to the penis or clitoris, for example. Although researchers are still exploring its actions, there is some indication that nitric oxide may also function as a sex-enhancing neurotransmitter. A more limited number of studies have looked directly at the effects of L-arginine on human sexual response. For example, a small 1994 study in which men took 2.8 grams of arginine every day for two weeks showed a significant improvement in erectile function. Another study found that almost three-quarters of 178 men with low sperm counts had significantly higher counts after taking 4 grams of arginine daily for at least three months. Most recently, a study published in 1999 followed 50 men with erectile dysfunction for six weeks. Among those who took a high (5 grams) daily dose of arginine, 31 percent reported significant subjective improvements in sexual function, compared to only 12 percent of those taking a placebo.
