Male Liposuction by stan lord
You might be surprised to learn that liposuction is the most frequently performed cosmetic surgical procedure in the country. While women patients still vastly outnumber men, the number of body-conscious males seeking lipo has more than tripled since 1992. Despite its somewhat hefty price tag (anywhere from $2,500 to $6,000 depending on how much you have vacuumed out), more than 20,000 men now opt for liposuction each year.
Fat may come and go, it seems, but fat cells are more stubborn. "No matter how much we exercise or how carefully we eat, some of us are left with stubborn pockets of fat," says Richard Marfuggi, M.D., author of Plastic Surgery: What You Need to Know Before, During and After.
While the amount of fat cells in the body is established by the time we reach puberty, those cells can then expand like balloons, he explains. "As an adult, you have a fixed number of fat cells. What changes is how the ones you have get blown up. Since you can't make new fat cells, once a healthy, active person has the cells removed, it tends to slim down the area we've suctioned." Marfuggi is quick to caution that sucking out stray fat cells doesn't mean you can't get fat again: "It just means that if you gain weight, you'll gain it somewhere else."
the final inch
When highly active men have love handles or pot bellies, Marfuggi notes, it may have less to do with dietary excesses than with how their fat cells are distributed. Jon, a 30ish Manhattan aerobics instructor, is a perfect example of someone who couldn't lose those last couple of inches. "I worked out like a fiend," he recalls with frustration. "Everything was great except my abdomen, which wouldn't budge."
Jon shopped around for a cosmetic surgeon who specializes in liposuction. Several months after the procedure, he is a slimmer, happier version of his former self. It was well worth the discomfort, he asserts, which was considerable.
"I felt like I was kicked in the stomach -- really hard," Jon says of his post-op recovery. "And I had to wear a compression garment for six weeks, a sort of a girdle that ensured the contraction of my skin. For two weeks I could barely get out of bed -- literally, since you use your abdominal muscles to stand up." Jon, however, returned to his normal workout schedule after a little more than two weeks.
Harvey Abrams, M.D., a Los Angeles cosmetic surgeon, is quick to caution that liposuction, while common, is not a quickie weight-reduction procedure. "It's true that you're getting rid of fat," he says, "but it's fat cells that are being removed. It's important to know the difference. This is major surgery, not some pick-me-up to replace your exercise regimen."
the snake cake
For those considering lipo, certain precautions are vital. For starters, it's important to have a complete physical before you go under the knife, and to tell your doctor about any drugs you take. Next, the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation advises investigating the credentials of anyone you're going to let loose on your love handles. "Just because a doctor performs plastic surgery doesn't mean he was trained as a plastic surgeon," says Marfuggi.
Realistic goals are a must, says Abrams. "I can't give you muscles that you haven't developed, but I can help you to show off the muscles you already have by removing that stubborn layer of fat."
Your diet should also be a consideration. "A popular misconception," says Marfuggi, "is that liposuction gives you an excuse to sit around eating Hostess snack cakes all day. You can't pig out, have it all sucked out, and then enter a Mr. Universe contest. This is the real world, and this is a real operation." Article Suggested By: PEA editors Suggest an article.
